Important Sleep Habits
Getting enough sleep is important to staying healthy. During sleep, our bodies work to support healthy brain function and keep us in peak physical health.
That is why sleep is important for children and teens. Some people choose to nap as a way to combat mid-day sleepiness. Napping provides a boost in energy. However, napping doesn’t provide all of the benefits that the body needs. In turn, this can easily lead to developing sleep deficiency.
It’s important to note that sleep deficiency can damage you in the long run. Long-term sleep deficiency has been found to increase your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and high blood pressure. Our immune systems also rely on sleep to stay healthy and can ruin its effectiveness to fight infections.
Sleep tends to be the first thing cut out of busy schedules.
Make sure you set aside enough time for sleep. It is important! There are a couple of ways you can improve your sleep habits. We recommend trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Limiting screen time before bed is another way to improve your sleep. Also, try to avoid nicotine and caffeine before bedtime. They are both stimulants and can keep you from getting a good night of sleep.
A good pillow is just as important as good bedtime habits!
Sleeping on your back is considered the best position to sleep in. If you like to sleep on your side, a pillow should support your head and neck so that your neck remains straight. A thicker pillow is recommended for sleeping on your side than sleeping on your back.
The worst position to sleep in is on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach puts strain on your back and neck. However, if sleeping or resting on your stomach is preferred, your pillow should be relatively flat, or your head should rest directly on the mattress so that your head and neck aren’t strained.
Pillows for combination sleepers also exist! People who have varying sleep positions should look for a pillow that has higher areas for side sleeping and lower areas for back sleeping. Using a single all-purpose pillow is likely to result in a pillow that’s too high for back sleeping and too low for side sleeping.
If you aren’t sure which kind of pillow is right for you, we are happy to help!
